Patchwork Headboard

Whether you own a beautiful, patchwork quilt, or you’ve been to places that sell them, you’re probably shocked when you check the price tag. They’re so expensive but so worth it. No regular store carries such beautiful hand stitching as what is found on handmade patchwork quilts. They’re real treasures. Wouldn’t you love to have that gorgeous look in your bedroom? Not on your bed but behind it? It’s not hard to give the wall behind your bed the look of a country quilt and, for a bed without an existing headboard, it’s the perfect way to dress up your bed – and the room.

You can use pieces of fabric or leftover wallpaper pieces to make the headboard. If you’re using cloth use a type that won’t easily unravel and a type which is not thick. Cut small quilt pieces or large ones. Keep in mind that, the smaller the quilt squares, the longer it will take to make the headboard. You’ll achieve the best look if you use at least three or four different colors and designs of paper or fabric.

If you’re using cloth, dip it in liquid starch, squeeze it out, then smooth it onto the wall. If you’re using wallpaper that is pre-pasted, dip it in water, and smooth it onto the wall. Wallpaper – or even scrapbook paper – without paste should have paste applied on the back before putting it on the wall. Gift wrap is another choice for making the unusual patchwork headboard.

Arrange the paper or fabric in a manner that creates a look like a patchwork quilt. It’s a good idea to draw a grid first so you’ll know where to place each square. If you want, divide the squares, from one corner to another, to make two triangles. Then, cut some of the fabric pieces in half the same way, swap one triangle for another of a different design, then hang them. The unique triangles inside a square design is often seen on patchwork quilts.

If you’re only making a headboard you can make it look much more substantial by adding molding around the quilt design. But, if you want, continue hanging cloth or paper and make a quilt wall. It’s a beautiful look for a room or just a way to dress up a bed that doesn’t have a headboard. You’ll love it and you’ll find it very easy to accomplish. And, wait until your guests see it!
