No-Sew, No-Slip Socks

It starts to get a little cold outside and the floors in our homes suddenly feel much colder on our bare feet. So, we grab some socks and walk around the house in those. Two issues: one is that most socks are slippery when walking on linoleum, tile, and hardwood floors. The other issue is that our socks tend to get worn out much faster when we don’t wear shoes along with them. Have you thought about making your own socks to wear around the house? That is, making over a pair of socks which can be worn around the house without worry over slipping? Don’t run for your sewing machine; you won’t have to sew a single stitch.

Make a pair of your favorite, thick socks into slippers by first starting with a piece of thin cardboard. Slide the socks onto your feet and stand on the cardboard, on a flat surface. Draw around each foot, staying next to the foot with the pencil, remove the socks, then cut out the shapes.

Suede fabric works well to make the non-slip bottom for the new slippers. However, some other fabrics will work well, particularly if they have a scratchy or rough texture. Select the fabric you want to use, lay it to be upside-down, then lay the cardboard foot shapes on it. Draw around these with a pencil and cut them out.

Use fusible webbing to attach the new foot shapes to the chosen slippers. Fusible webbing is ironed between two fabrics to adjoin them permanently. You’ll find fusible webbing at both fabric and craft stores. Lay the fusible webbing out flat, with the wrong side up, lay the cardboard shapes on it, then draw around them with a pencil. Cut out these shapes.

Slide the cardboard pieces into the socks and position them in a manner like your foot would be if it was in the sock. Set one sock on the ironing board so that the sole of the sock is pointed up, and position a fusible web foot shape on it. Over that, lay the matching suede or other fabric piece. Iron the pieces together, following the instructions on the fusible web packaging. Do the same to the other sock.

Slipping and sliding around on the floor is just not safe but lots of people do it anyway because it’s so comfortable. When you make those socks slip-proof you not only make them safer but the socks will hold up longer. And, they actually keep your feet even warmer than just plain socks.
