My Babyvv Soft-Structure Baby Carrier: Sewing the Body Piece

These instructions are made for use with the MyBabyvv Soft-Structure Baby Carrier pattern. Before taking these steps, the shoulder straps should be completed and the body piece should be prepared and assembled.

I am not responsible for the safety of your carriers.
This set of instructions is simply that; a set of instructions. I have done my absolute best to ensure that this set of instructions is very detailed and takes any and all safety issues into account, however, I cannot be held responsible for any products you create. There are many factors that could cause your carrier to be unsafe for use, such as choosing a poor quality thread, failing to double- or triple-stitch when indicated, choosing poor quality fabrics, or incorrect tension settings on your sewing machine. There are countless issues that could result in the carrier you create being unsafe. For this reason, I can, in no way, guarantee the strength or durability of the baby carriers you create using this pattern and am not responsible for any issues that arise from any carriers you create.

1. Sewing the body piece of the carrier
Beginning on the right side, sew around the carrier. Slow down when you reach where the nylon extends from the carrier, as going too fast over the nylon may cause your needle to break. Once you’ve sewn all the way around the carrier, go back to the beginning and go over the seam a second time.

Sew a zig-zag stitch several times within the seam allowance where the nylon extends from the carrier and where the straps extend from the carrier. This will help provide further strength to the carrier.

2. Turn the body piece right-side out

To turn the body piece right side out, simply pull the straps out from the bottom side of the carrier. You should be able to turn all of the edges out using your fingers, but you may need to use a corner turner.

3. Topstitching and adding padding to the body
Cut two 6 inch by 2 .5 inch pieces of batting or foam. Remember to double up if you’re using batting. Place a pin horizontally approximately 1/2 inch to 1 inch below where the nylon inserts into the body piece. Place the piece of batting or foam on the inside of the carrier, up to this pin, and then press it against the edge and place another pin along the outer edge of the foam through the body piece to hold it in place

Repeat on the opposite side.

Begin sewing on the right side, along the innermost edge of the batting or foam. When you reach the top of the batting or foam, lower your needle and turn the fabric, creating a corner. When you reach the edge of the body piece, turn your fabric again and continue sewing along the carrier.

When you reach the batting or foam on the opposite side, put your needle down and turn the fabric just as you did previously, creating a corner. Sew down to the bottom of the carrier.

15. Xbox stitch the straps and nylon webbing
Just as before, you will need to create another xbox stitch. This time, the xbox stitch will be at the point where the straps and nylon webbing enter the body piece. The bottom edge of the xbox stitch will be approximately 1.5 inches from the edge. As before, go over these stitches twice more, creating a total of three seams on each line.
