Music Ability is a Gift

I watched my son when he was young play the piano without knowledge… the music from his fingers were a a gift he was born with. I loved to hear him play his melodies from his soul that no other person could know. Then when he was a youth he turned to playing the Alto Sax and the mellow tones were sweet to my ear. Then one day he asked me for a guitar and because I love music and love musical instruments I bought him one as soon as I could. The music in his heart had presented with the piano and the sax yet with the guitar it was more than presenting it was bursting forth with melodic harmony and full emotion. So to my son I write this poem. Thank-you son for enriching my life with your music.

The Guitar Player

Music sounding in his ear, in his mind,
The true feelings of the heart, of the soul,
Paper is found by pen and words of kind,
Are written down until the page is full.

Then two gentle hands find their instrument,
Calloused fingers seek out their given place,
Bare thumb strumming the strings… the air is rent,
Rich notes float in air whilst the tune keeps pace.

With booted foot tapping a gentle rhythm,
The guitar player strums deep from his heart,
Words seem to come alive, as he sings them,
For they are him… as he has lived the part.

Together he and the guitar are one…
Both are one with the tune… one with the mood,
He plays and sings golden until he’s done,
For the guitar player… the crowd has stood.

I am a firm believer that if a child has a desire to learn a musical instrument that they should be allowed to do so. In my area some of the school districts are having to cut back on offering music classes. I feel that this is a real shame.

To my son– I love your playing, and I love your composing. My heart sings when I hear you play.
