Muammar Gaddafi: Why He Hired Female Bodyguards Called “Amazons”

A day after the death of Muammar Gaddafi, news of the hated Libyan dictator’s personal life are coming to surface. During his 42-year reign, the unstable ruler had his share of strange things going on. Who ever heard of a harem of 40 virgin women as bodyguards? Gaddafi had his reasons for hiring women to protect him during his reign. Obviously they were seen as less than men, but they were given very powerful positions.

Moammar Gadhafi Believed Men Would Be Easily Distracted

Mirror reports that Muammar Gaddafi didn’t want men as bodyguards because he believed they would have been easily distracted and an Arab man would have difficulty firing at a woman.

The female bodyguards had to be incredibly skilled to carry out fatal missions while wearing elaborate uniforms, heavy makeup, and wearing high-heeled boots while toting submachine guns around. The regime was referred to as “Amazons.” They didn’t have an easy job, as one can imagine. They reportedly were expected to succumb to Gaddafi’s sexual favors.

Moammar Gadhafi Thought He “Empowered” Women

Gaddafi believed he empowered women when he said, “Women should be trained for combat, so that they do not become easy prey for their enemies.”

Most dictators in war-torn countries justify their reasons for how they treat women. Once they’re assassinated, further details arise and shock the rest of the world. It’s not often female bodyguards are what so-called traditional “Islamic” men take on. Usually they use them for sex and rarely give them positions of power. The “Amazons” didn’t have as much power as it appeared, however.
