Kentucky Camping: Thanksgiving, Fall & Other Holiday Camping Trips

Camping in Kentucky during the fall brings great scenery, relaxation, delicious food and plenty of activities. Enjoying state parks around Kentucky is one way to take in all the delightful events that are in store for campers.

Kentucky Campgrounds

Fort Boonesborough State Park located in Richmond has several fall activities in store for campers. Beginning the second week of September, Fort Boonesborough will begin its annual list of fall activities. Among the first on the list is the Fall Camper’s Yard Sale. This is a great time to not only shop for unique items but to bring your own items to sell. Although only registered campers are allowed to set up yard sales in the campground, locals from the area are invited to come and shop. A $10 fee will be charged on top of the regular camping fees for those who want to set up a yard sale.

Next on the list is Boonesboro Boogie National Car Show. This is an annual event that lasts three days. For the 2011 show, Boonesborough State Park expects nearly 1,000 different vehicles to be entered. Concessions and other vendors will be set up for your enjoyment. If you would like to place your vehicle in the show, call 502-863-3960.

Holiday Camping

Boonesborough isn’t all about yard sales, car shows or even history. The park is loaded with fun fall events, including the annual Halloween Fest. Each year at Halloween Fest, the park is open to campers who want to try to put on a Halloween show of their own. Every camper is encouraged to bring along as many Halloween decorations as they can find to decorate their campsite. Why? Campsites will be judged on creativity and decorations.

Of course, that is not all the park has planned. Other things on the list at Halloween Fest include: pirate putt-putt, ghost walks, costume contests, pirate hike, Halloween parade, bean dinner, a Pumpkin Express hayride, and to top it off, a wake up to a pancake breakfast. If you would like more information or want to reserve a camp site, call 859-527-3131, ext. 218.

If you will be camping during Thanksgiving at the park, sign up for the annual A Camper’s Thanksgiving. It is a fantastic event that allows campers from all over to enjoy each other on this traditional American holiday that comes but once a year. Campers will meet in the park’s recreational room where games will be played. Other activities on the list include: putt-putt golf, free tours, and don’t forget the turkey and ham potluck dinner.
