After a much surprised shake up in the Divas Division over the past couple of weeks, current Divas Champion Kelly Kelly was able to retain her title at SummerSlam 2011 against the Glamazon Beth Phoenix.
It started back in June with the “Power to the People” edition of Raw. I was in the audience that night because it was here in Baltimore. We voted to have Kelly Kelly face off against then Divas Champion Brie Bella. Kelly Kelly was able to win her first ever Divas Championship.
In subsequent challenges, including a rematch against Brie, a Divas Royal Rumble was convened to find a new number one contender. As Kelly Kelly sat ringside, Beth Phoenix and the Bella Twins were the last 3 standing. In a shocking power move, Beth Phoenix was able to lift both Bellas and dump them over the top rope, making Beth Phoenix the new number one contender for the Divas Championship. Kelly Kelly went to shake her hand and congratulate her when Phoenix attacked her and sent her flying out of the ring. After grabbing a microphone, Beth Phoenix told Kelly Kelly that the days of perky, blonde, bimbos in the Divas division were over.
A few days later, on SmackDown, Natalya followed suit after defeating A.J. Natalya said that she was now with Beth Phoenix in her crusade against perky Divas.
This past Monday on Raw, Beth Phoenix competed against former Divas Champion Eve Torres and picked up the victory. Casting Eve in the same camp as Kelly Kelly, Phoenix had some words for Eve before Kelly Kelly attacked her from behind. Then Phoenix teamed up with Natalya against A.J. and Kaitlyn on SmackDown. Calling themselves the “Divas of Doom,” they picked up the victory. After the match, they dropped A.J. out of the ring and put Kaitlyn in the famous SharpShooter.
At SummerSlam tonight, Beth Phoenix was accompanied to the ring by Natalya and Divas Champion Kelly Kelly was accompanied to the ring by Eve. There were a lot of people who didn’t give Kelly Kelly a chance against a diva as strong as Beth Phoenix. But Kelly Kelly held her own and dominated the match. She was even able to roll out of a coming Glam slam to pin Beth Phoenix and retain her title. Incidentally, she pinned Beth Phoenix in the same way she pinned Brie Bella when she originally won the title.
Congrats to Kelly Kelly on retaining her championship and we will have to see if the Divas of Doom will continue to survive.
