Kate Hudson and Chaz Bono: two celebrities with little in common except parents making news about their kids. Kate’s estranged dad Bill Hudson came out with a tell-all book calling her a “spoiled brat.” Transgender Chaz Bono’s mom Cher, on the other hand, is supporting him on DWTS.
Kate Hudson is the daughter of Bill Hudson, (of the bubble-gum 70s Saturday morning kids show The Hudson Brothers Razzle Dazzle Show) and Goldie Hawn. Hudson grew up pretty much sans dad Bill. In his spill-all expose “2 Sides: The Other Side of Fame and Family,” Hudson criticizes Kate and calls her a “spoiled brat.” Why? Because Kate, he says, doesn’t visit her grandmother. Hudson also bares all about his ex-wives Hawn and Cindy Williams (of “Laverne and Shirley”).
Hawn and her then-boyfriend Kurt Russel raised Hudson’s kids. Bill claims that shared custody is the reason he couldn’t take a more active role. I was raised in joint custody; my dad did his part. He visited and had me for regular visits. That was back when courts were less favorable to fathers. If Hudson couldn’t get custody of his kids or didn’t see them enough, he needs to look within and quit the blame-shame game.
It’s been speculated that Hudson, only wrote the book for publicity. It’s been said he’s tail-gating on the success of his daughter and ex-wives. I was liked the Hudson Brothers Razzle Dazzle Show. That was decades ago. No one even remembers them now. The Hudson Brothers have been forgotten in the flotsam and jetsam of Hollywood. Kind of pathetic, really.
Children of celebrities often write memoirs, like Christina Crawford’s “Mommy Dearest,” exposing life with their famous parents. While books like this may be sensationalized, inaccurate and shallow, they are more understandable coming from kids. Parents who profit from slamming their children are vultures.
Kids (even adult kids) need champions, not critics. Celebrity or not, they need encouragement. Parents have to chastise kids, but it shouldn’t be the bulk of their communication. And it shouldn’t come 30 years after a parent bailed on the family. That’s why I mentioned Chaz Bono. Cher may not always have been the mother Chaz, as Chastity needed. Chaz’s sex change wasn’t easy for mother or child. Cher now supports her daughter cum son as he moves into his new transgender life. She’s not even going to steal Chaz’s thunder by showing up for tapings. I’ll bet Kate wishes Cher could have talked sense to her dad before his poison pen memoirs.
