It’s Cold Season

It’s that time of year, fall, then winter. It’s holiday season folks. Time to bundle up, make some egg nogg, sing songs, and pray that you won’t get sick. I’m prone to allergies, bronchial infections, you name it. When the temperature changes, I feel that cold and sore throat creep on in the door. And, it’s not fun. I take some Tylenol, maybe Aleve, but I still never fully recover. I’m not saying over the counter drugs don’t work, but I sometimes feel the drugs just mask the problem. So I’ve been trying to heal myself holistically. I’ve come up with a few different ideas that you can try at home, that seem to be working for me. Check them out. No one deserves to be sick during the holidays.

1.My chicken soup recipe to clear sinuses up: First I boil some chicken (I prefer frozen organic chicken strips) in water. I add onion, garlic, ginger, cayenne, vegies of any kind, dill, oregano, salt, and let sit for about 20 to 30 minutes to soak up all the flavors. There really isn’t any measurements or time to this. It’s quick, easy, and the cayenne really adds that extra pop to get rid of the nasty cold. You can add potatoes, pasta, rice, whatever you want. I usually just eat the soup with chicken. It’s perfect for a sick day.

2.Nasal Rinse: You’ve heard of the Netti Pot right? Well, I use something similar that I bought at a drugstore. It’s called the Neilmed Sinus Rinse Kit. It provides you with the salt and the tube. You fill the salt in the tube with lukewarm water and basically rinse your nasal passageways. It’s a little strange at first, but after doing it, you feel so much better, and not so congested. It only costs 12.99 at CVS drugstore.

3.Hot tea: Brew half an orange with the skin on in a pot of water. Add lemongrass, ginger, 1 garlic clove, a couple of limes with the skin on, and brew for 30 minutes. Then add honey to it, and lemon if you prefer to make it sweeter. It feels so good on your throat. Works to make your immune system stronger.

4.Rest: Stay in bed as long as needed with a good book or magazine. So worth it to get as much sleep as needed when feeling ill.

5.And lastly, if symptoms get worse, and you don’t get better, go to the doctor. My advice is try the above, and then if you don’t feel any different you should always check in with your physician. Good luck, stay healthy!
