Hurricane Irene is threatening the east coast, and if needed, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg will plan a possible evacuation for residents in low-lying areas. Parts of Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn, and Staten Island are anticipated to be evacuated, Bloomberg reports.

Such an event in New York City would create a form of chaos in itself. Although the mayor goes on to say there will be shelters on higher ground for evacuees, accommodations will be challenging for that number of people. Saturday morning Michael Bloomberg has the power to issue a mandatory evacuation, but he will only do that under the “worst circumstances.”
