How to Recycle Used Appliances

When the time comes to replace that old fridge, stove or other appliance, how do you know the proper way to dispose of it? This is a common problem many families come across at some point and it’s common to not know what to do with a big clunky appliance. The best step is to look for ways to recycle your used appliance so it does not end up junking up a landfill somewhere.

Here are some ideas on how to recycle used appliances:

Give it away- Is there still some life in your appliance? If it works fine and you just wanted an upgrade or a more efficient model, then you might consider giving your old appliance away to someone. This is an especially good idea if it’s something people might really need such as a washer or dryer. You can use a Freecycle program, word-of-mouth, Craigslist, yellow paper advertising or other methods of giving away your old appliance. Even if the appliance is broken or damaged, you may still be able to give it away to someone who can use it. Try calling appliance shops. Many will take things they can use for parts.

Donate it to an organization- Another way to recycle your old appliance is to donate it to an organization. You will be helping to support a worthy cause while also being more eco-friendly and preventing waste. Good charity organizations to consider are Habitat for Humanity, Goodwill, and the Salvation Army.

Recycle at a local recycling center- Another option if you cannot find anyone who wants your old appliance is to find a local recycling center where you can drop it off or have it picked up for you from your home. There are different centers, all with different rules and regulations on what they can accept so you will need to do some research into what is available in your area. Some options to consider are State Recycling Resources or State Agency Waste Management Program Links.

Contact your local energy provider- In many areas, your local energy provider will help you recycle the appliance. They want to see you be more energy efficient, just as you do, so they will help you by picking up your old appliance and recycling it for you. Sometimes you can even get discounts on your energy bill when you participate in these programs.

Another option that you have to recycle used appliances is to ask the new vendor that you are buying from what you can do with the old one they are helping you to replace. In many cases, they will take the old appliance to their own recycling program for you. If not, they can often give you some good local resources to contact.
