How to Make and Use Ear Drops to Prevent Swimmer’s Ear

Swimmer’s ear is a bacterial infection of the outer ear canal. In the medical field, it’s called “acute external otitis” or “otitis externa”. It’s commonly caused by water stuck in the ear after swimming, hence its name. It can also be caused by other water sports, or when there is excessive moisture left in the ear. The water provides a moist environment that’s conducive for bacteria to grow and flourish in. To help prevent swimmer’s ear, you can make and use ear drops. These won’t cure an existing infection. They are a protective measure.

Important Warnings:
1. If an ear is already sore or painful, itches, is red, or has a discharge or is draining, do not use these drops. Instead, seek proper medical treatment.

2. Do not use swimmer’s ear drops if you have an ear tube or a perforated eardrum.

3. If either ear hurts, you notice a hearing loss, or there is a discharge after you use the drops, consult your healthcare provider.

Swimmer’s Ear Drops
1. Pour equal amounts of white vinegar and rubbing alcohol in a small bottle with a dropper in the lid. Close and shake the bottle gently to mix the ingredients.

2. Tilt the head to one side to drain water from the ear. Tilt the head to the other side to drain the other ear. Dry the outer ears with a towel.

3. Tilt your head to the side and gently pull the ear lobe down. Place 5 to 10 drops of the mixture into the ear. Keep your head held to the side for a few minutes so the ear drops don’t drain out.

4. Hold a facial tissue, napkin or paper towel up to your ear. Raise your head up and allow the drops for swimmer’s ear to drain out. Wipe off any drops that run out of your ear. Bur, don’t wipe the ear out in an attempt to dry it. The drops will help evaporate leftover water in the ear.

5. Treat the other ear by repeating steps #3 and #4.
