How to Install and Repair a Metal Roof Coating

Metal roofs are well liked because they are very versatile and environmentally friendly due to their ability to be recycled. The materials used are aluminum, copper and steel. One advantage of metal roofing, besides its obvious attractive sleekness, is that it is fireproof. However, there is one disadvantage of metal roofing, and that is corrosion. To repair corrosion, a metal roof coating installation is needed. Below are some tips on how to do it.

A metal roof coating installation can be done over previous old coating, something that is unique to this particular method of preservation. In addition, the elasticity of the coating is retained, expanding in summer and contracting back to its original shape at night, or in winter. This shape changing does not damage the coating. The adhesiveness of the roof coating with the metal roof must be tested before wide scale application. This helps determine whether the particular coating bonds well with the metallic roof surface.

When preparing the roof, cracks, gaps or loose fasteners must be corrected over the whole roof surface. Pressure wash the entire roof surface; a mild biodegradable detergent can be used. The roof should be allowed to dry completely. Once the roof is dry, it is advisable to apply a coat of primer to the roof surface in order to increase the adhesiveness that is needed between the roof surface and the metal roof coating. A wide range of metal roof coatings are available with varying degrees of thickness.

The best way to apply metal roof coating is with the use of an airless sprayer, but using a brush or roller would also work. The metal roof coating installation should be done in such a way that the coating is even over the whole surface of the roof. Take particular care to cover the repaired gaps and cracks on the roof surface very well with the coating. Applying two to three coats of metal roof coating ensures the best results. Note that subsequent applications should only be done once the previous coat is completely dry.

Having a metal roof coating installation has many advantages besides damage control. The protective layer over the roof adds insulation; improving cooling in summer and retaining heat in winter. According to research, ultra-violet radiation is also prevented from penetrating through it.
