How to Create the Smokey Eye Look

The smokey eye look is more popular than ever. Here’s how to do it, step by step:

First, you want to pick a palette. You should ideally have four colors. I like to use white, black, a light brown, and a darker brown. Whichever colors you choose, make sure you have one dark color, one medium color, one light color, and then a pearly light color (like a shimmery white).

After you’ve picked out your colors, you need to form a base. If you have makeup primer, use this on your eyelids. If not, foundation will do the trick. Put the foundation over your entire upper lid. You can add some below your eye to cover up any dark spots too. Using foundation or primer will keep your eye shadow in place much longer than going without.

Use a dampened brush to line the top and bottom eyelid with the darkest color. If you do not have eye shadow brushes, you can use a damp Q-tip or shadow swab. The brush works best wet when you want dark, precise lines.

Now you’re going to use your medium color. Brush the color lightly over the lid of your eye going up to the crease. It is alright to cover the darker shadow layer. If you go above the crease, wipe off the excess shadow.

Using your light color, brush from above the crease of your lid, up to your brow. This layer should be light and subtle.

Now the pearly light shadow is added to the corners of your eyes to make them look bigger and brighter. Since your eyes are white, white works best. You can also add just a dab of your pearly shadow right under the arch of your brow to highlight it. This step really brings the look together.

Finally, you’re going to use the dark shadow again. Apply a thin, dark line above your top lashes. I like to add more shadow to the outside corners of my eyes, and less towards the center. After, smudge with your fingertip or a cotton swab to get the “smokey” look.
