How to Build Your Own Fabric Headboard

When we moved to a new, larger house, we found one downside in that our master bedroom was smaller. This made it impractical to bring our former large bedroom set into the new master bedroom and instead we had to pare down a bit.

I had always liked the idea of a platform bed but we didn’t want to purchase a whole new bed when there was nothing wrong with ours. So what we deiced to do was keep our bed on its metal frame and then create a fabric covered wooden headboard for the top of the bed.

Here’s how I did it:

1. Went to the hardware store and purchased a piece of plywood as wide as our king-sized bed and just about half as tall. 2. Purchased batting and a material that matched our bedroom décor from the fabric and craft store. Upholstery-weight fabric works best so you don’t have to worry about it tearing when you try to attach it to the wood and it will hold up better over time. 3. Mark the center of the plywood and use a yardstick and pencil to draw diagonal lines across the plywood. These will be used to add buttons to the headboard. 4. Wearing safety glasses, I used a drill to drill holes into the plywood where I had marked with the pencil (where the lines intersect). 5. Lay the plywood down on a flat surface and spread the fabric over the top of it. I purchased enough that it would wrap around all edges of the headboard with some left over in case of mistakes. 6. Then I attached the fabric to the plywood using an industrial stapler on the back and began adding the batting material to make it puff out like a pillow. 7. I sewed buttons on through the holes I had drilled in, added more batting and so on until the entire surface of the plywood was covered and all the buttons were in place. 8. Then I stapled it up at the bottom, too and closed off the entire project. My new headboard looked somewhat like a stuffed pillow to hang on the wall above our bed. 9. I used mirror hangers to hang the headboard so it was sturdy and would not fall.

There are many great ways to create your own wooden headboard designs. You don’t have to use fabrics either. You can use painted wood, corkboard and many other fun designs to create your own unique, custom headboard. You can complete the project same-day in just a few hours.
