HGTV’s “Design Star” Hits Halfway Mark

Did you hear that giant “whoosh” sound last night around ten p.m.? It may have been the sound of Cathy’s ego deflating as she was sent home from HGTV’s “Design Star.” All season long, Cathy has caused aggravation to whomever she was assigned to work with. When it came to compromise, she made Congress look accommodating. And now, the player we loved to roll our eyes at is gone.
It was somewhat of a surprise. After the wedding challenge, I thought Karl might be making an exit. He was chastised by the judges for a poor flower arrangement in the groom’s lounge, although he did help with the successful drape over the dancefloor.
All in all, the judges didn’t like much about the wedding decor created by the competitors. Mark was deemed the “winner” of the challenge for his choice in lighting and a creative skateboard inspired wall hanging. Meg’s flower arrangements were not well-received(I thought they were pretty weird) and none of the judges cared for Leslie’s sign in table or Cathy’s sweetheart table. They did like Kevin’s furnishings in the groom’s lounge and Kellie’s swag over the dancefloor.
The bride and groom seemed pleased with the decor, and the fact that it was all finished in twenty-four hours was miraculous. (The show must get special delivery considerations, no delivery company is that reliable for the general public!)
So after weeks of hearing Cathy brag about how she had design cred that the others could never hope to match, she is gone. Did she deserve to go? She probably deserved to go more last week when she made a cluttered mess of kitchen countertops in the name of “styling.”
I think the judges were onto the fact that the general public didn’t care for Cathy’s bragging, or the way she belittled her opponents. No one I’ve spoken to wanted to watch a show that she hosted. And that’s really what “Design Star” is about—–creating another show that people will want to watch.
