Happy New Years and a Happy Divorce

Now that the holidays are over and the New Year has begun, couples are breaking up and who could be happier but lawyers, therapists, mediators and real estate agents?

Amongst professionals in the legal business, January is known as the official National Break-up Month. Apparently, twice as many couples break up during the month of January than any other month of the year. This is the time when spouses decide to call it quits and move on but why in January?

During the years when I worked as a paralegal, some clients confessed they didn’t want to break-up during Christmas because they didn’t want to spoil the mood and fun for their children and other family members. In other words, the Christmas festivities were nothing but a sham…and being caught together underneath the mistletoe was nothing more than embarrassing.

If spouses weren’t feeling emotionally bankrupt, their financial situation was also another reason why they waited for January to commence divorce proceedings. According to the Law Office of Molley B. Kenny, “One of the reasons many couples wait to divorce is that divorce can be expensive. With a new year comes the opportunity to file your taxes and get a refund check that can help with the extra expensive(s) of divorce.”

Some view January as the right time to divorce because it’s the start of the New Year and they want to begin their new year with a fresh start or a clean slate and perhaps a new partner.

Out with the old, in with the new?
