Gabby: A Story of Courage and Hope by Gabrielle Giffords & Mark Kelly

Gabby: A Story of Courage and Hope by Gabrielle Giffords & Mark Kelly

Most of us did not know who Gabrielle Giffords before that fatal day on January 8, 2011 when she and many others were gunned down by a deranged man in Tucson, Arizona. It was just after an election that was hard on the country, especially in the Tucson area, when it happened. We learned about a woman who had been elected for a third term in the House of Representatives had been gunned down and her name was Gabrielle Giffords. She is also the wife of astronaut, Mark Kelly, whom we did not know very well, but after the incident in Tucson, we got to know very well.

Gabby is the story of Gabrielle Giffords and her long and miraculous recovery after being shot in the head. Many others were not as fortunate as she was. We learned about her from the news media and what not, but what we did not know is the intimate details that only could be told from the two of them. As I read this book, I was amazed by all that she endured to recover from the shooting. She was shot on the left side of the brain, which, from what I learned, controls much of the right side. So she had to relearn how to do much of the things that she knew how to do before the shooting. It would be daunting challenge for many people but for Gabrielle Giffords; it was a challenge that she knew she could do. And through it all, the one person that she could count on was always there. Mark Kelly, astronaut, was the one who loved her and was there for her through it all.

It was in 2007 that they married. Mark Kelly, a divorced man with two daughters, and Gabrielle Giffords, a woman who was a political person in the House. We had no knowledge of them before what happened in Tucson, but now that we do, they are, I guess, you can call it, a golden couple. This book tells the story of this couple; how they lived before and after the shooting. They were planning on a family before the shooting. They very well may still try for that family in the future, but right now, everything is focused on Gabby and her recovery. Gabrielle Giffords was and still is a strong willed woman who is determined to overcome what happened to her and be more once she has fully recovered. She has a lot to overcome but from what I read and also saw on the Diane Sawyer interview, she is doing it. We may not have known about her before that fateful day in January, but we do now and I know there a lot of people who are rooting for her. Even though she has a long road to go to get where she needs to be, she will do it, with her husband, Mark Kelly, by her side.
