Free EFL/ESL Activities that Focus on Vocabulary – Part 2

Vocabulary activities are great way to help your EFL/ESL to improve their English and learn new words. Here are three activities that will interest you.

VERBS IN ACTION

Choose a set of verbs to review. Divide students into two teams. Say a verb and invite a student from team one to come up in front of the room and act it out. Give a point to the student’s team if they get it right. Repeat the procedure with the second team. Continue the game until all verbs in the set have been reviewed.

POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE ADJECTIVES

Come up with a list of famous people and places. Using one word at a time, say the name of the person or place to the group. Get students to respond by giving a positive adjective and a negative adjective to describe the noun. After all the words on the list have been used, invite students to formulate sentences using any new adjectives they learned.

PHRASAL VERB MAYHEM

Write some phrasal verbs on the board. Don’t, however, write the preposition. For example, the phrasal verb can be “sit down”, but, just write “sit”. Divide students into two teams. Have each team come up with as many phrasal verbs as they can with the verbs on the flipchart. Tell students that they must not only create a real phrasal verb but also guess the meaning. Have them write their answers on a paper. The team with the most correct answers wins.
