Floating Bookshelf

Don’t you just love crafts and projects which help you create something that makes people look, then look again? It’s fun to see the looks on the faces of friends who see something unusual or odd at your place. Like, won’t they think it strange when they see a book just stuck to your wall? And, of course, they’ll ask you about what type of magic has the book plastered to the wall, and you’ll enjoy either pretending that you have no idea, or telling them all about how you did it. It’ll just take you a few seconds to tell them how you did it and it doesn’t take a lot longer than that to actually make the book shelf.

Use some old book you’ll never read and make the shelf with it. The book must be a hardback type and that’s about the only requirement. The book can be large or small, depending upon the size of shelf you want to make. If you want, print out a jacket for it so that it looks like you have a rare or even a famous book.

You’ll just need a couple of things from the hardware or home improvement store and they’re not expensive. Just buy an “L” bracket – shaped exactly like an “L” – and the screws by which to hang it. Buy only “L” brackets which have completely flat metal. For large books you’ll need two or more brackets.

Mount the bracket(s) to the wall. Make sure that, if you’re mounting more than one bracket, you have them spaced evenly and hanging level. Then, open the back cover of the book and apply bonding glue to it. On the inside of the back cover, apply the glue all over it. Apply the glue to the opposite side, on the last page of the book. Position the book so that the pages are facing the wall, and so that the binding is facing you, and set all but the back cover on the brackets. Close the back cover so that you trap the brackets between it and the last page of the book. Clamp the book shut – or tape it – until the glue dries.

The book on the wall is an oddity that’s also cute and funny. People will certainly look twice when they see a book just stuck there, but it’s also a useful creation. Set picture frames, statuettes, other books, and more, on the shelves. It’s a quick and easy project that’s also a fun conversation piece.
