Five Ways for Grandparents to Build Kids’ Self Esteem

Parents aren’t the only ones capable of building kids’ self esteem. Grandparents have a special bond with their grandchildren. This enables them to reinforce their sense of self worth. Plus, they’re in a unique position. Next to their parents, who knows kids best? Plus, who has all the time in the world to make them feel good about themselves? You do.

1. Start by teaching them about their heritage. Knowing where you come from gives them a better sense of where they’re going. It also gives them something to be proud of before they’ve had the chance to accomplish great things. Grandparents who teach grand-kids about their heritage are building a foundation for their future.

Give them roots by:

*Showing them historical family photos and memorabilia.

*Working on the family tree together.

2. Show off their masterpieces. It’s one thing when Mom puts your drawings on the fridge. When Grandpa displays your art work, it leaves you all warm and fuzzy. After all, his kids are grown. He doesn’t have to clutter up his house with kids art. He must really like the grand-kids drawings. His grand-kids must be very special people.

When it comes to kids creations:

*Frame them.

*Put them in prominent places, not just on the fridge.

*Point them out to all your friends.

3. Brag about the grand-kids accomplishments. Make your friends jealous. Embarrass the grand-kids by letting them overhear. Make it very obvious what you think of them. Be sure to carry their pictures with you. Fill your walls with their triumphs. Encourage them to share their talents by teaching younger siblings. Make a big deal out of it. The bigger, the better.

4. Hold holiday talent shows. Showcase your grand-kids talent at family gatherings. This gives them a self esteem boost in a non-judgmental environment. This is also a great way for kids to get over stage fright. They’ll get used to public speaking from an early age. It doesn’t really matter how talented they are. It’s about the effort.

5. Broaden their interests. Give your grand-kids a chance to explore the possibilities. Finance a few activities to help stretch their parents budget. Having varied interests gives them more opportunities to shine. Encourage them to take on new challenges in their field of interest. A sense of accomplishment is vital in raising self esteem.

Grandparents might help foot the bill for:

*Music lessons or instruments

*Sports uniforms and equipment

*Visits to educational venues (planetarium, museum, etc.)

Whatever you do to boost the grand-kids self esteem, remember these three factors.

1. Treat them with respect

2. Don’t force them to perform.

3. Avoid criticism.
