Facebook’s Unwelcomed Changes

If you are a Facebook user, there is a good chance that you’re upset this morning. There is also a better chance that Facebook could not care less if you’re upset. You see, Facebook decided that change needed to be made to improve your social networking activity and yet again they did not ask you what changes needed to be done.

In the expanding Social Networking world (hello Google+), Facebook is trying to find a way not to lose its members. In some bizarre world, they decided that selecting what News Feeds they thought were important to you should be listed at the top of your page. Gone is the “Most Recent” and added is an annoying live news tracker to the right side of your page. The outrage has been enormous as Facebook’s own blog is currently flooded with members expressing how disappointed they are by the chances. This is unlike the request for an “Unlike” or “dislike” button. Truth be told, anyone can type in “unlike” in the comment section to make it known they disapprove of something. With the recent news coming out that Facebook is thinking of adding buttons such as “read”, “listened”, “watched” and “want”, you would think Facebook was listening to its users. However, when doing a search for groups of people who want those buttons, I was coming up empty. This has become much bigger since once again, Facebook seems to believe this will improve the function of their product and the user experience.

There is an old wave of thought that nobody likes change. Anytime there is some “improvements” made to Facebook, there is typically a small by vocal minority of people who will complain about everything. However, this response to this has been so overwhelming that it’s hard to believe that Facebook is not listening.

Facebook is trying to stay in the game. However, if they fail to listen to the users, there is a far better chance they’ll end up like MySpace or Friendster and not like Google+. Change my not be welcomed but a change to Google+ might be one we all can take.
