Facebook Ticker Release Annoys Users

UPDATE: September 21, 2011 10:05 AM CST

Facebook brought back the Ticker feed along with their new news feed update overnight. At least 100 updates from those on my friends list and their friends list have hit the news feed stating the latest roll out by Facebook is hated.

When one social networking site tries to keep up with Google’s release of Google+, it takes away from the originality of the site. Google is a search engine trying to catch up with the social media take off sites like Facebook and Twitter have succeeded in doing.

So Facebook, you have the market in this type of social media. Now you can stop trying to keep up with the Smith’s because you are the Jones. You are have what Google wants.

Do your users a favor, lose the Ticker and the latest update for your news feed.

Update: August 28, 2011, 12:25 PM CST.
The Ticker feed written about below has disappeared from my own feed page on Facebook. Since I am no longer seeing people on my list on Facebook not liking it any longer, they could have taken it down due to all the complaints.

On Sunday, August 28, 2011, Facebook released their version of a feed that has quite a few users annoyed. The Ticker scrolls faster and faster with each status update on user’s friends list.

The ticker shows every like a user makes on a comment, every comment on a user’s or friend’s page, every new friend request and acceptance, and more things most people don’t care about. Even a young family member of mine despises the Ticker feed. You know an update is bad when kids are complaining about the same thing as the adults are on Facebook with their off the wall updates.

Except in this case the update is on the main page wall of feeds for updates and not on user profiles. Sure as I type that, Facebook will add it to user profiles as well.

There is a reason people set their accounts a certain way Facebook. They prefer usability for their own needs over useless items they don’t want or need for one of their favorite social networking sites. At this rate, Facebook could be loosing steam with users over annoying additions like this.

During writing the four paragraphs there were just as many complaints as there were actual comments and other updates through the Facebook Ticker feed. This is reminiscent of the Twitter feeds that would plague Google searches before they got a grip and lost the feeds.
