Eco-Friendly Heating or Cooling Pillow Instructions

Buckwheat is a seed that retains heat or cold far better than rice or other grains. Buckwheat is hypoallergenic and works well as the filling for a homemade eco-friendly heating pillow. Repurpose an old sweatshirt or sweatpants into this easy to make heating pillow.

Things You’ll Need:

Old sweatshirt or sweatpants
Ruler
Scissors
Straight pins
Sewing machine
Thread
Funnel
Buckwheat

Instructions:

Step 1: Cut two 7-by12-inch rectangles from an old sweatshirt or sweatpants. Adjust the size to create a heating pillow the exact size you require.

Step 2 – Turn the two rectangles so the front side of the fabric is facing one another. Match and pin the edges together.

Step 3 – Sew a ½-inch straight seam around the exterior of the rectangle leaving a 3-inch opening along one edge.

Step 4 – Turn the fabric of the rectangle so the seams are on the inside. Reach through the opening and grab the opposite side of the rectangle. Pull the fabric through the opening. Continue to pull the fabric until all seams are on the inside.

Step 5 – Place the small end of a funnel in the opening.

Step 6 – Pour two to four cups of buckwheat into the heating pillow.

Step 7 – Pin the opening closed and sew together.

Place the completed heating or cooling pillow in the microwave or freezer. When placing the pillow in the freezer, first place it in a large ziplock bag.

Tip: Make a long tube of buckwheat to use as a rest for your wrists while typing on a computer keyboard.
