Easy to Crochet Square Mug Rug or Coaster Pattern

Crochet a square mug rug or coaster using only a single crochet stitch. This easy to make pattern is simple enough for beginners and quick enough for experts to create personalized mug rugs or coasters for themselves or as gifts. A great attribute to the project is it uses scrap yarn. This project is an excellent one to use left-over yarn and create a usable household item.

Things You’ll Need:

Scrap yarn
Size G/4.25 mm crochet hook
Scissors

Instructions:

Row 1 – Chain 2 stitches. Single crochet 4 times in the second chain stitch from the hook. Attach the last stitch to the first stitch in the row with a slipstitch in this row and each row thereafter.

Step 2 – Chain 1 stitch. Single crochet in the next stitch. Chain 3 stitches then single crochet in the next stitch – repeat around for a total of four openings. Attach the last chain stitch to the single crochet stitch at the beginning of the row with a slipstitch.

Step 3 – Chain 1 stitch, this counts as the first stitch of the row and each row thereafter. (Single crochet in the next single crochet stitch then once in the chain 3 opening of the last row. Chain stitch 3 stitches. Single crochet in the opening.) – repeat the pattern two more times. Single crochet in the single crochet stitch on the last side of the square. Single crochet in the opening then chain 3 stitches. Attach the last chain stitch to the first stitch of the row. Repeat Step 3 for a total of 10 rows.

Continue the pattern to create larger mug rugs, coasters or even placements. Use the same pattern to make baby afghan, throw, adult afghan or blanket. It is a fun pattern that just keeps growing the more rows you add.
