Easy Privacy Screens

I’ve seen many different folding screens in my lifetime. Some are all wood. Others have silk panels with wooden frames. Some are full-size; others are short, table-top versions. They’re all pretty, though, and there are many online guides to help you build them. The guides, however, can get pretty lengthy, and the materials, costly. There’s a quick, cheap, and easy way you can build privacy screens – short or tall – with little money, supplies, or effort. This guide will show you how to do just that.

As the material for the panels themselves you can use silk, other fabric, gift wrap, or another type of paper. Decide on how tall you want the screen to be, and how wide, then off you go to the home improvement store nearest you. Look for wooden dowels, or even wooden slats, as the joints for your screen. A good size for the dowels is an inch in diameter. A good size for the slats is two to three inches wide, and a half-inch thick. You’ll need one for each end of the screen, and one for each joint on the screen. When you purchase the wood at a large home improvement store, they’ll cut it for you for free, and that saves you a lot of time and trouble. Plus, it ensures that each board or dowel you use will be the same length as all the others.

Lay the chosen sticks or dowels out on a floor and, using a tape measure, space them evenly apart. Place one at each end then space the others between those two. It can be helpful to tape each end of each stick to the floor; that will keep them from moving as you attach the material.

One way to make the screen is to attach the chosen material horizontally. To do this, cut a long piece of the material, apply glue to each stick, then lay the piece across all of the sticks. If making a tall screen, it could be necessary to lay another, and another, horizontally, so that they reach from the bottom to the top.

To attach the material vertically, cut a piece of material to be as long as the wood. Position one long edge of the material on the first stick, then glue the second long edge down the middle of the second stick. Cut the next piece of material, start where you left off, then attach the other long side of this new piece to the next wooden piece. Continue to do that until you’ve got all your panels in place.

Whether you make the privacy screen tall, short, long, or just a two-panel, you’ll find it really easy to do with this instructional. Fold and unfold the screen as you need it, set it on a table, or on the floor. No matter what type of privacy screen you make, you’ll marvel at how easy it is to create.
