Corporate Greed in the Name of Capitalism is Destroying America

The flavors of corporate greed are many, from flat salaries, outsourced jobs, and reduced benefits, to increased medical insurance premiums and reduced education and recognition budgets. It all boils down to the same outcome, taking money out of the pockets of middle class Americans, and putting it directly into the pockets of the corporate officers. The millionaires who are never satisfied, never have enough, and will do anything, however unethical, to stuff more millions into their bank accounts. The middle class engine that drives our economy is sputtering on fumes and the greedy millionaires are driving by in their luxury vehicles. OK, I can hear it now, corporations are responsible to the stock holders. But let’s think about who the stockholders really are … isn’t most of the stock held by the very same class of people that are responsible for the policies of greed? What you have here is the rich feeding the rich. The average middle class worker can no longer afford to purchase any significant amount of stock because they are too busy trying to scrape up enough money for their last oil delivery, or to pay their 20% responsibility for their last hospital visit.

And it appears that corporate America can do whatever it wants, without any expectation of ethical behavior. When IBM decided in 1999 to discontinue providing long promised medical benefits to future retirees, where was our government to step in and protect workers from this blatant breach of ethics? I’ll tell you where our government was, they were on vacation, vacations that were paid for by corporate lobbyists. When IBM and many other corporations decided to outsource tens of thousands of jobs to overseas nations, why was there no action taken by our government to protect the American middle class worker. I’ll tell you why, because the same class of people who are destroying the middle class, are serving in congress. The greedy millionaires in Washington who are out of touch with average middle class people and catering to the greedy millionaires on Wall Street and in the board rooms across America.

So where does the middle class turn? Unions have been all but banished from the earth, our millionaire politicians in Washington have guaranteed a government of the rich, by the rich, for the rich, and in the name of capitalism corporate America has fully embraced the profit at all cost approach that leaves ethics and middle class workers out in the cold.

I’ll tell you where they turn, they turn to Zucotti Park. When there is no one to represent the people, the people have to speak out and represent themselves. And since no average middle class citizen has enough money to be elected to congress, or have any influence on politicians, they speak out in protest.

These hard working Americans who are protesting corporate greed have it right. These are the true patriots who clearly see that our current course while beneficial to the wealthy few, is leading to the destruction of our country.
