Comings and Goings in the Season Finale of ‘True Blood’

Sunday night was certainly an interesting night on television, as the fourth season of “True Blood” wound to a dramatic close. Along the way, we said goodbye to some of our favorite characters, and new doors opened to provide hints to the possible future of the series.

The Death of Jesus

This was certainly both one of the most shocking and most emotionally wrenching moments of the season, and indeed of the series, as we watched the possessed Lafayette murder the man who has brought him so much happiness the last two seasons. Of course, the fact that he was possessed by the vengeful Marnie does not make things any easier, either for him or for us, as we had all grown rather fond of Jesus and his undeniable love for the quirky and sassy Lafayette. However, we can hope that some future appearances are in store, as the still living Lafayette is a medium.

The Return of Russell

Without a doubt, this was one of the most terrifying yet exciting moments in the season, as we learn that the very powerful and very angry former king of Mississippi has escaped his imprisonment and, presumably, wants to exact his revenge on those who imprisoned him: Sookie, Eric and Bill. Of course, Russell is one of the best villains the series has ever produced, so it will actually be nice to see him back in action, causing who knows how much mayhem. Let’s just hope that he doesn’t meet the fate of so many other vampire baddies on the show.

The True Death of Nan

No one can argue with the fact that Nan was without a doubt one of the most vicious and venomous female vampires that “True Blood” has thrown at us (except for Pam, who definitely takes the cake). Her staking by Bill in a fit of rage at her condescension was both shocking and, in a way, unnecessary, as she was actually one of the more powerful female figures in the show; her death doesn’t really seem to accomplish much. However, we’ll just have to see if her death is shown to have served some purpose, which won’t become apparent until the next season.

The Reappearance of Gran

The most shocking and powerfully touching moment of the night, however, occurred when Gran came to aid Sookie in her attempt to finally push Marnie to the other side of the grave. The reappearance of that stately woman, after so many seasons of absence, was a soft moment in a series that has made its mark by being both sexual and gritty. Even though she only appeared for a little while, it was enough to let us rest assured that Gran was resting in peace, as she should be.
