Hey Kids, Meet Claude Monet
Claude Monet was born in Paris, France on November 14, 1840. He was the second child of Louise-Justine Aubry and Claude Adolphe Monet. In 1845, the Monet family settled near the ocean in Ingouville, France. In 1851, Claude began attending school. He studied many subjects, including art. When he was a young teenager it became apparent he had artistic ability. Claude would draw caricatures of his teachers on his schoolwork. By the time he was 15 he had developed a reputation as a caricature artist, and his caricatures were displayed in the window of a local frame maker’s shop. People began to recognize their fellow villagers in the drawings. Claude soon began to charge people to draw their caricatures, and was able to make a steady income…

Art Projects for Kids

Lilly Pond | Impressionist Painting Lesson
This is one of Monet’s most famous paintings. It was painted at his garden in Giverny, France. The impressionist style is clearly seen in this painting with the visible brush strokes and the emphasis on how the light reflects on the bridge, water, and trees. Students learning this technique will gain an appreciation of focusing on the whole scene and not just the individual parts of the scene.

Materials needed for this project are:

Color Plate of Water Lily Pond (1897)
Cardstock or Medium Weight Paper
Oil or Tempera Paints
Sponges
Brushes
Paint pallet (cardboard or paper plate)

Monet and Impressionism
This art project is another opportunity for students to learn and apply the technique used by Monet to create his paintings. In this project students will explore negative space, and develop their ability to mix color on a palate.

Materials needed for this project are:

White heavy stock poster board 10×10 or larger
Masking tape
Scissors
Sponges
Green, yellow, blue, pink, purple, white tempera paint
Paper plates for palettes
Clean up material

Worksheets about Monet

Maybe you have a student who is a bit apprehensive to explore the art projects. Here are a few worksheets that will help the child learn about Monet without having to put paint to palate.
