It’s not about snow
or mistletoe –
bright lights
freshly cut fir trees
It’s not about the Grinch
or Santa Claus –
colorful elves
magically flying reindeer
It’s not about presents
or cinnamon incense –
marching Nutcrackers
dancing sugarplum fairies
No, none of these –
so what then?
It’s about a newborn child
conceived divine –
wrapped in rags
placed in a cattle troth
It’s about angels singing
of His birth –
to the outcast of society
shepherds, willing to listen
It’s about the silent entrance
of humanity’s Savior –
into a world that,
from the beginning,
condemned Him to die
And regardless
of what the season’s
commercials and ads proclaim
– The best gift –
His heavenly gift –
Is always free.
