Choosey Lover

We met in high school, he said he loved me
Soon ‘though he cheated, so he loved me not.
He said: “Sorry babe,” Friends said: “I was crazy…”
For taking him back, but they loved him not.
Again and again, he cheated, he left
Me to cry, to my friends, who were angry
At me for forgiving, but was clever and deft
And I saw my future in him, frankly
Yes, stability in our home with room for two cars
So I hung tough and 4-years later, I won
He can’t go anywhere without me, I’ve won
We plan to marry, first love’s worth the wars
Now, he’s the man he was destined to be
And I? Want an open-relationship…he’s driving me crazy!

We met in high school, he was the cool nerd
I was class President, I played the fool
He gave me spasms of heartache, unheard
Before I’d be alone I’d be his tool
Not one of the other girls truly wanted him
No, but they loved the attention he gave
You see, he longed for a Barbie to make him Ken
I built him back up after each one showed herself a knave
As an adult now, I can see, I’ve gone crazy
He wants for nothing, has accomplished nothing
Only here, ’cause I fought so long to be
He doesn’t even see my, “I love yous” are bluffing
He is the man he always was: simple
Like first love, always was, detrimental

Because we met in high-school
And I knew nothing, but my home wasn’t the place I wanted to be
Because we met in high-school
And he managed to make being smart look cool
Because we met in high-school
And I had no idea it would ever end
Because we met in high-school
And all as well as everything he was, was in high-school
Because we met in high-school
And I, now, risk everything that has come to mean something to me
Because we met in high-school
And I find myself unable to set myself free, I drive myself crazy asking, why did he choose me?
