Breathe Ricky Breathe

This is not an article to advocate the legalization of marijuana. That’s for another time, and another place altogether. This is an article to reflect on the accomplishments of an unheralded hero. Ricky Williams has become the bearded face of redemption in the NFL. He’s done this without the fanfare of Mike Vick, or hoopla of Plaxico Burress. Williams quietly became one of the most respected Miami Dolphins, and has made huge strides in promoting alternative healing. This is a stark contrast to how he left Miami in 2004, after failing another drug test. Williams was seen as a selfish burn out who deserted his teammates, coaches, and fans.

Looking back, Williams may have shown more strength by quitting then anything he’s ever done on the football field. Diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder, the stress of professional football had taken its toll physically and mentally. During his hiatus, Williams sought treatment at a holistic healing center which promoted the use of yoga and meditation. This also allowed him to quit his marijuana use, and positively direct his energy toward helping others. Williams even began teaching his own yoga sessions, and became an advocate for others with anxiety to seek help.

There are many great athletes in sports who never say anything meaningful, or support any worthwhile cause that doesn’t enlarge their pockets. In this case, we have an athlete that eschewed the money in order to find a higher purpose. Williams recently signed a two year deal with the Baltimore Ravens to serve as a backup. He claims he will retire from football, and continue his journey to locate inner peace. Even as his detractors bashed him, Williams maintained a loving and nurturing attitude toward anyone he came across. While he’s still in our sights, the time is now to appreciate this true role model.
