5 Tips for Traveling by Safari in the Serengeti

The Serengeti National Park, in Tanzania, is the “go-to” place for watching wild animals up close and personal. The “endless plain” of the Maasai people, who’ve been grazing their cattle here for more than 200 years, is of special interest. Bring cameras along and photograph lions, gazelle, hyena, giraffe, cheetah, ostrich, waterbuck, and topi; and those are just a few of the many species of animals who live in the Serengeti.

When and Where to Visit

Life in the Serengeti revolves around the migratory habits of the animals. The entire area is in constant flux and you should schedule your trip based upon the type of animals you wish to view. The National Park is enormous and many opt for a safari trip north to Nomad Olosokwan Camp from the middle of May to the end of November or visit the southeast Nomad Playa Camp from December to the middle of April.

Accommodations in the Wild

There are three popular methods of safari accommodations:

Some safari operators feature less luxurious digs in the form of mobile camps equipped with basic sleeping needs that include bed linen and duvet. The camps have toilets and shower facilities.

Luxury tented camps provide safari members a unique opportunity to enjoy the wild sounds of the Serengeti. This type of accommodation is usually a covered dwelling with a floor, an en-suite bathroom, and a covered verandah. Safari lodges are unique and very Tanzanian in design. They blend in with the wild landscape of the park. Each building has amenities much like that of a luxury hotel. It is quite common for wild game to come very close to your private porch.

Health Concerns

Prior to travel in Tanzania, many physicians strongly recommend Hepatitis “A” vaccination and many visitors also take a course of anti-malarial tablets.

Before entry into Tanzania, you must show proof of immunization against yellow fever. You should visit with a health travel physician at least six weeks before your trip.

Hospitals and clinics in Tanzania are sparse and medical supplies are not readily available. Immediate transport back to your home country is the best solution for emergency medical attention.

Packing for the Climate

Anytime, except during the rainy season, is a good time to visit Tanzania. Temperatures average 75 to 80 degrees during the day and depending upon your site, the evenings could get chilly. Travel gear should include:

Sunglasses, a hat, and plenty of sun lotion

Insect repellent and flashlight

First aid kit equipped with a back-up supply of malaria medicine

Vaccination documents and a valid passport for six months
