5 Things to Help College Students Stay Organized

When you’re entering college, having the right supplies can be kind of intimidating. One thing you can do is make sure you’re set with a few things that will help to keep you organized and make your life a lot easier. Going through this experience right now, I can tell you first hand these will help.

1. A good computer:

Now, there is always going to be a bunch of controversy over this, but putting the Mac vs. PC argument aside, you really just want a computer that will meet your needs. Not everyone needs a computer with a blazing fast CPU and tons of memory. I actually have a laptop set aside just for school work and a desktop that I built specifically for music production and gaming. If you’re looking for a laptop that’s great for basic school work, but is capable to run some more graphically intense applications, Apple’s Macbook Pro lineup is perfect. Screen size is up to you, but the 13 inch model is a great one to go with if you’re on a budget. Window’s based laptops are great as well, but I have just noticed that my Macbook Pro integrates very well with my school work. The college you are planning on going to may even have a recommendation as to what computers they use.

2. Smartphone

There is a wide array of smartphones on the market and there really isn’t one correct or incorrect choice. The important thing is to find one that works best for you. For me, that would have to be my iPhone, simply because of the App Store’s wide variety of applications. There literally is an application for just about everything, which makes organization very easy. This phone also integrates very well with my Macbook Pro. Android is an alright interface, but it doesn’t have anywhere near the selection of applications that the App Store does.

3. A good backpack

This may seem obvious and dumb, but I cannot tell you how many times I have seen students just throw everything in there one pocket backpack. Organization is really key here, and can make college much easier. It’s important to have a fairly large one that can carry everything you need and is somewhat durable. Wenger is a company that made the first Swiss army knife and they make great backpacks as well. I currently have one from them that has a laptop carrier as well as a place for my books and other random supplies. The best thing about this brand is that they are extremely durable, which would explain why this pack still looks brand new after years of use.

4. Organizer

This can be something that you pick up at the store or if you have a smartphone, you can get an organizer application. These are a great way of helping yourself manage your time and keep track of your assignments. Time management is difficult for many students and I suppose it could be for just about anyone, but this should definitely help get you on the right track.

5. A good workspace

I realize this is not an “object,” but having a good quiet and organized space to think and keep track of everything is important. I didn’t stay at my college so it was much easier for me to get a good workspace. It helps to not have too many distractions as well. Whenever I work, I like to have a nice clean workspace and maybe some light listenable music playing in the background, as it helps me to stay relaxed and think better than in the dead silence. I don’t think there is anything wrong with having some music playing, so long as it’s not too loud and doesn’t become a distraction. Having a comfortable chair helps too!

These are just five items that are helping me to stay organized and make it through college with minimal stress. I hope these will help you if you haven’t entered college yet or are struggling making it through. Good luck to everyone out there!
