3D Movies: Are They Really Necessary?

Confession: When I hear Hollywood plans to “remake” classic films like “Beauty and the Beast,” “Titanic,” and “The Great Gatsby” in 3D I don’t even blink an eye- I just tune out. For whatever reason I have never become hypnotized by 3D videos, and I don’t care to start now. In all honesty it really upsets me that the Hollywood I romanticize about, the one every one romanticizes about, has turned into this money hungry business that makes movies for a 13-year-old girl audience and no one else.

I remember growing up how I just couldn’t fathom why any sane human being would ever watch a black and white movie, yet all of these “movie mavens” only had positive things to say about pre-Technicolor classics. Besides “The Wizard of Oz” I had never given black and white movies a chance, but then I watched “Some Like it Hot.” For those who know me, you can attest to the fact I have never looked back. I’m in love with the charming scripts, the original music and costumes, and the talented actors, which is why it’s so hard for movies today to “catch my fancy.”

Costumes today include tight booty shorts a size too small for an actress who thinks dinner consists of a carrot stick and shot of water, scripts full of cheesy lines or sick jokes that are not memorable for their greatness but their stupidity and plots soaked in explosions and car chases, so it’s no wonder Hollywood is scrambling to find something that will make them money. But the problem is 3D is just not something that should be so readily available.

For one thing I don’t enjoy wearing glasses on my face, especially while watching a screen. I don’t like admitting this but my 20/20 vision is no longer 20/20. I have glasses which the eye doctor recommends I wear if I want to see things, but guess what, I don’t wear glasses because I don’t like the way they look and even more I don’t like them being on my face.

Another downside to 3D is I get motion sickness watching those. Sure I want to feel like I’m there, but good acting can do the trick just as easily as things popping out at me, and acting has the added bonus of not making you nauseous.*

*Good acting is not corny acting, so if you get nauseous from corny acting, my argument still holds.

This morning I was cruising on my way downtown, listening to the radio, and there was a guest personality describing the best and worst new movies coming out. When she began speaking I was surprised she opened with “there are not a lot of good movies out right now” and thrilled when she went on to agree and give a dispensation to those who dislike 3D movies. VICTORY!

What’s wrong with 2D? Nothing! I was so happy upon hearing this I hoped Hollywood was listening. The people may occasionally want to see a 3D movie, but we want it to be an exception and not the rule.
