It is dividend time again, a welcome woo-hoo to look forward to before the long winter hits. As a lifelong Alaskan, I can say as soon as September hits I begin wondering how much I’ll be getting from my PFD. Usually the amount of the Alaska permanent fund dividend is announced in mid-September, typically the 18-22nd sometime, leaving residents about two solid weeks of real wondering. This year 2013, if you happen to find this article when it is no longer this year, the announcement date is set for September 18, 2013.

Alaska PFD fund is $900 in 2013.

An announcement in 2011 from the Alaska Permanent Fund Division detailed the funds 2011 performance, and revealed record returns, the third highest the fund has ever seen in fact. The fund gained 40 billion. Sadly, as many of us know, the PFD amount is actually based on an average of the last five years of the fund’s returns. The fund did well in 2011 and 2013 gaining 20.6 percent and 10.5 percent respectfully, but in some of the other three years, not so much. 2008, the funds previous top return year in the average drops off this year. In 2010 and 2012, the fund did not perform well due to volatile global stock markets. With two extremely low years in the mix, the PFD amount dropped below $1,000 for the first time since 2005 last year.

Last years numbers were as follows:

FY 2008 2,938- dropping off this year
FY 2009 2,475
FY 2010 1,590

FY 2011 2,143
FY 2012 1,568

With 2008 falling away and a positive year that is not as high as 2008 replacing it, it’s no wonder the PFD amount was estimated to drop.

On the bright side, as returns improve the fund is expected to rebound in 2014, but we won’t likely see an amazing increase until 2015 and that’s only if the fund continues to perform well as 2010 drops out of the calculation.

What was rough estimate of the 2013 Alaska PFD?

Most current estimates put the final amount somewhere around $800. Early estimates were quoting below $800, but now that information has been released on the funds 2013 performance, estimates are coming in closer to last years $878 at around $840.

The 2013 Alaska Permanent Fund Dividends will begin to disburse on October 3, 2013 for those who signed up early online for direct deposit.
