Why the NES is the Best

The original Nintendo Entertainment System is the best gaming system ever made for a few reasons. One reason is that it was basically the first gaming system that brought quality games into people’s homes via the television. Video games were thought to be a passing fad until the NES came out and rejuvenated the industry. The system itself as well as the controller pad was fairly simple yet revolutionary.

Another reason the NES is the best gaming system is because of the quality of the games. The best Nintendo games featured compelling story lines in both side-scrolling and overhead-scrolling action. The original Super Mario Brothers is one of the best side-scrolling (left to right) action games ever made. Compared to our modern video games, the technology used to make Super Mario Brothers is far less advanced, but in my opinion the game was more entertaining to play when it first came out compared with say Mario64 or a game like Halo on the Xbox. In fact, the new Super Mario Bros. game on the Wii copied the look and feel of the original game and is currently one of Nintendo’s best selling games for that very reason.

The original Zelda was also one of the best games ever made. It featured overhead-scrolling action and a very interesting story. Zelda was also one of the first video games to integrate puzzles with action and adventure. The Zelda series is typically rated as the best video game series of all time, and both the Legend of Zelda and Zelda II on the NES are just as fun as the newer Zelda games, although certainly not as flashy.

Another game that is one of the best ever is the original Metroid. The game is similar to Super Mario Bros. with its side-scrolling action but it is also considered a first-person shooter game. Zelda, Super Mario Bros., and Metroid on the NES are enough to compete with any other game console, yet there are so many other great Nintendo Entertainment System games that are as fun to play as these games. Some of the other great NES games include Contra, Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out, Rush N’ Attack, Mega Man, RC Pro-Am, and Excite Bike.

Below is my list of top 10 Nintendo games which I would put up against any other game system out there as far as entertainment value. So go ahead and dust off that old NES or download some of these classics from the Wii shop and relive some of the best video games ever made…
