Why Do so Many People Reject Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior?

Why do so many people reject Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior?

Despite all the evidence showing that Jesus is the Messiah, many people reject Him as Lord and Savior.

The most fundamental reason is that humanity is “hard-wired” to rebel against God. “The wicked are estranged from the womb; They go astray as soon as they are born, speaking lies,” writes the psalmist in Psalm 58:3 (emphasis mine).

In the 51st Psalm, King David addresses the inherent sinfulness of man: “Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, And in sin my mother conceived me.” (emphasis mine).

Because of his sin nature, man loves his sin and rejects the light of God because he does not want to be changed: …. “the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.” (John 3:19, emphasis mine).

The ungodly find the things of God to be foolishness (1 Corinthians 2:14) and, as it is written in John 12:43, love “the praise of men more than the praise of God.”

People do not want to give up their counterfeit gods – wealth, prestige, career, physical beauty, etc. – and submit to the lordship of Christ. In Matthew 19:16-23, we find the story of just such a person – the rich young man; he was unwilling to let go of his earthly treasures in order to gain eternal life with Jesus.

Given that the things of this world are nothing more than a bubble about to burst, this was not a wise decision.

The truth of the matter is that Jesus is the only way to God: “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” (John 14:6).

The book of Acts also speaks to the exclusivity of Jesus for salvation: “Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.” (Acts 4:12).

How one responds to Jesus affects one’s eternal destiny.
