What Characteristics Make a Great Boss?

Since I have had experiences with all types of bosses, if you are a boss, or planning to be one, this article will be extremely important to you.

Why is this so important? Well, when you are working with people, it is extremely important that the people who are working under your supervision, respect and find you pleasant to work with.

I, as well as other people I know, have had some extremely negative work experiences due to bad bosses. For example, as a teacher, I have had some terrible principals. There is one I can remember, who constantly visited his teachers’ classrooms, and was always taking long negative notes on the way they were instructing their students.

Yes, I agree, it is very important for a principal to know how his teachers are doing. However, for a boss to be extremely critical, and unable to say something positive, is a very cold and unfriendly boss.

It’s important to make suggestions, but it certainly should be in a warm, friendly way, and in such a way, where you feel the boss is sincerely trying to help. When a boss is too authoritative, there is an indication that perhaps this person is trying too hard to be the big boss.

A boss should realize that no one is perfect, in real life or at work. Many bosses feel that they are doing a good job if they are constantly judging their workers, and making undesirable demands of them, just to show who is boss.

The role of a great boss is one who supports and motivates their workers. It’s great to have a friendly boss who is there to help when it’s needed, and not constantly criticizing. A good boss does not wait for the employee to ask for help, but asks if he/she needs help.

Also, it is important for bosses to let their employees know that they are being sincere when they ask employees if they need help. It is important for a boss to understand the employee’s job so help can be given when needed.

Good bosses are perceived as competent when give feedback both positive and constructive. This helps the employee develop professionally, and it avoids surprises during performance reviews.

A good boss never talks about others in the organization, except in a favorable way.

It is important for a boss to show compassion. For example, if an employee has had a death in the family, or has had a bad day, the boss should be human and show compassion. Sometimes an employee has to vent out feelings. The good boss will listen and be sincere when responding.

If a boss is a good boss and well liked, employees will not want to leave. Production will be good, and everyone will be happy.

So make sure you are a great boss.
