Week 8: Instant Dance Returns to “Dancing with the Stars”

Down to the final five, each “Dancing with the Star” couple had to bring their A-game to get into the elite four. With Ricki & Derek and J.R. & Karina dominating the individual dances, the remaining three couples needed to work hard to prove that they were contenders for the mirror ball trophy. This week, they had to prove they could dance two couples’ dances. “Dancing with the Stars” brought back the Instant Dance. This time a jive was chosen, and the couples only had minutes to prepare. They had to show whether or not they could dance under pressure. Who would stand and who would falter?

Perfection

J.R. & Karina performed the last dance before the second round, seeing if they could waltz their way back on top. It was pretty good. I saw a few stumbles though that could have cost them a point or two. The couple earned a 30 — the first perfect score of the season. J.R. & Karina then did their jive to “Tutti Frutti” by Little Richard. It was the best jive of the night, with tricks and technique. Much better than their previous jive. The judges awarded their effort with another 30, giving them the first perfect score of the season. Their total was a perfect 60 out of 60.

Tied in Second Place

Hope & Maksim danced the quickstep. Maks tried a new, calmer approach to teach Hope how to dance. Maks even introduced her to his family. They messed up at the beginning of the dance. At times, Hope was good; other times it looked like Maks dragged her across the floor. I didn’t think it was as good as last night, but it was pretty good. They tied with Rob & Cheryl, earning a 27. Hope & Maks danced to “The Best Damn Thing” by Avril Lavigne. Hope’s previous jive was stiff, so she was determined to do better this time. It was a vast improvement. Their timing was better, and Hope looked like she was enjoying herself. The judges gave it a 25, for a total of 52.

Ricki & Derek performed a waltz, facing a lot of pressure from landing on the top last week. Their waltz looked romantic and seemed to have all the technical aspects of the dance. It looked like it was going to be a three-way tie, until Bruno gave them a 10. Ricki & Derek earned a 28. Ricki & Derek did the jive to “Land of a Thousand Dances” by Wilson Pickett. They performed the jive in week two and got first place. This jive was fast paced, with a few missed steps. Her feet came off the floor a few times. They earned 24 for the jive, tying with Hope & Maks with an overall 52. It was not their worst dance but not their best either.

Rob Shakes His Way to Third Place

Rob & Cheryl, who landed in second place last week, first performed the quickstep. At first, I didn’t think Rob would do the dance well, but it improved after a slow first few seconds. Rob even managed to keep the signature Kardashian butt tucked in most of the time. Rob & Cheryl earned a 27 for this dance. The couple then performed their instant jive to Hall & Oates “Man Eater.” I honestly didn’t think Rob could do it. There were some shaky moments that cost them, but Rob gave it a good effort during most of the dance. They got a 24 for the jive for a total of 51.

Nancy Land Last Again

Nancy & Tristan, who landed in the bottom two last week, performed the tango. Their contentious relationship continued in rehearsal. I thought it was her best dance of the season even though her knees sometimes did some weird things. Nancy & Tristan earned a 24 for the tango. The couple performed their jive, a repeat of last week. It was messy from beginning to end. The judges took note, giving them a 20. Nancy & Tristan got a total score of 44, landing in last place.

All in All…

For the most part, the couples brought their best in the fight for the semifinals. I agree with Len, when he compared Nancy’s run to Cinderella. It is midnight, and she should go home. I’m a little tire of her and Tristan’s fighting. Besides, there is a recent court case she can talk about on her television show. After this week, I think Rob and Hope proved that either of them belongs in third place. We shall see on Tuesday’s result show. Special guest include Flo Rida, Andrea Bocelli and Cirque Du Soleil “Michael Jackson The Immortal World Tour.”
