Urban Landscaping

Every spring it seems like there are two things that go on in yards across America, vegetable gardens and landscaping. Most homes do not have room for a vegetable garden, but they have planters and areas for trees. Not all vegetable plants are hard to grow or messy looking. Instead of planting plain trees and flowers in your yard consider planting edible trees and vegetable plants.

Citrus trees are very bountiful with produce and during the spring can provide a strong fragrant aroma to the yard. The Citrus fruit is a hardy fruit and even if the fruit has ripened on the tree can stay good for a few months following. Cherry trees can offer a dark red hue to any yard, sprucing up colors while providing fruit. Cherry flowers are some of the prettiest fruit tree blossoms followed by the apricot tree who’s flowers are a rich magenta color. Fruit trees are hardy and provide shade, color and food all at the same time.

Vegetable plants can be daunting especially if the grower has never had experience in growing vegetables. Most home improvement shops sell vegetable plants come spring and they offer most varieties. However there are plenty of Online Seed Sites that offer not only seeds but plants as well. They offer rare heirlooms or different varieties that cannot be found at local stores.

Eggplants provide a beautiful purple flower usually followed by large deep purple fruit. There are other heirloom varieties that will provide other colors as well. Oregano, an Italian herb, is great for ground coverage. This plant continues to grow, extending its reach and filling the open space around other bigger plants. Carrots, dill, and fennel all provide leafy filler space in between plants. Dill and fennel are also butterfly attracting plants, providing a colorful and lively landscape.
