Underrated Disney Films

Although Disney has become well-known for its ability to produce quality animated films, there have been a few of these animated movies that have fallen between the cracks and not received the recognition they deserve. Through their ability to transcend the usual Disney formula, these particular films deserve more esteem than they typically receive.

“The Black Cauldron”

Perhaps no other Disney film has become quite as controversial as this one, which is an adaptation of the novel written by author Lloyd Alexander. Filled with dark imagery and some scenes that are downright frightening, “Black Cauldron” was one of the only animated films produced by Disney to receive a PG rating.

Despite this, the film actually has some of the most sophisticated storytelling of any entry in the Disney canon. Of course, the animation is as lustrous and magical as any the studio has ever produced.

“The Hunchback of Notre Dame”

Although produced during the Disney Renaissance, this film was not quite as well-received as some of its predecessors, due in large part to the dark and sometimes adult-oriented themes present in the story, including adultery, lust, and dangerous desire. However, the film is arguably one of the most artistically mature and aesthetically complex of any entry in the Disney canon, with characters that show more depth than those typically on offer in Disney pictures. Just as importantly, the animation is truly dazzling, the shots of Notre Dame Cathedral truly deserving acclaim.

“The Fox and the Hound”

This film, also produced during the slump that occurred in the 1980s (and prior to the Disney Renaissance), is truly one of the saddest of Disney movies. Despite this, it is also very emotionally complex, asking tough questions about nature and how large a role nature has in the ways we behave. The ending, while not as happy as those usually found in Disney films, nevertheless does hold out a sliver of hope that one day the two friends, the titular fox and hound, can find peace with one another.

If you are looking for a great way to spend the family movie night, be sure to check out these oft-overlooked Disney films. Everyone in the family, including and especially Disney fans, will love these films for their combination of artistic maturity, catchy songs, and relatable characters.
