Twilight Tryst–A Sestina

Ra dies and dusk ascends, arising like mist-

Darkening the ground, lengthening the shadows

Emerging from the depths to conquer the sky.

Twilight arises to join its dark consort,

And together they watch as night grips

The Earth with a cloak of obscurity.

From hiding comes lovers of obscurity

Wrapped in their evil intents like a mist

Or veil upon a kingly consort.

These glide through alleys, seeking shadows

To conceal their acts from the watchful sky-

The damning deity who holds us in his grip.

The artful one rushes between street lights, gripped

By the morbid fear of what hides in obscurity.

Hurried footsteps awakening the shadows;

Face full of dread, looking to the blackening sky

Knowing nighttime will come and conceal like mist

The path to reach her companion-her consort.

Gray fog whirls and dances in consort

With the blackness that now holds earth in its grip.

Snaking clouds arise from the gutters like putrid mist-

Infecting all who dare to linger in their obscure

Embrace. Click-clack–her shoes are echoed by the shadows

And swallowed whole by the fanged, pitch-black sky.

No moon offers its solace from the inky sky.

The universe itself does scheme in consort

With villains and vampires, to hold her in its grip.

Cold and icy fingers brush her skin like damp mist.

She pulls her coat around her like a shroud, obscuring

Her vulnerability from the shadows.

The world has turned its back and she is but a shadow

Of her former self. Someone who had fallen from the sky

And now lay, bruised and battered, in the grip

Of her enslavement-a traitorous consort

That refused to deal but in obscurity.

Paranoid delusions cover her mind in thick mist.

Emerging from the mist comes the darkest shadow

Of all. Gripping her obsession as a loving consort

And obscuring her shuttered eyes from the infinite sky.
