Tips on Replacing Rotten Walls

When a wall is exposed to moisture, there is an increased chance that rot will occur over time. When you notice rotten walls, it is important to determine what the source of the moisture is and fix it, and then replace the rotten walls to prevent mold or mildew growth. Mold in the home is a health hazard, and should be dealt with as soon as possible. Replacing rotten walls is a simple task for any homeowner to complete, and can be done in a short period of time.

Remove rotted sheetrock or drywall with a sledgehammer or prybar. Before replacing rotted walls, you must determine where the moisture is coming from and repair it. Call in a professional plumber to make required repairs, if necessary. Replace 2-by-4 wood studs within the wall if they also have damage. Secure the new studs to the exposed frame with wood screws.

Place the drywall or sheetrock against the studs so the top of the sheet is up against the ceiling. Have a partner hold the sheet in place, and screw the boards directly into the studs using drywall screws. Install screws using a drill into the middle of the boards, moving across each stud, and then go back and secure two more screws into each stud, one above and below the initial screw. Trim any boards, as necessary, with a utility knife. Continue to install boards until the studs are completely covered. When covering an outlet, measure the distance from the floor to the outlet or electrical box with a measuring tape and transfer those measurements onto the drywall sheet. After installing the sheet to the studs, use a reciprocating saw to cut out necessary openings.

Cover each joint with drywall tape, and then apply a thin layer of drywall mud to the tape with a putty knife. Spread the mud diagonally over the tape, and extend the mud at least two or three inches past the tape to ensure ample coverage. Allow the mud to dry thoroughly. Sand dried mud gently with a medium-grit sandpaper to smooth out, and wipe the wall down with a dry cloth to remove any dust. Paint as desired.
