This is Not Chump Change

As a person living on a limited budget, I am always trying to find creative ways to save money. Every penny counts. I’m not the kind of person who sees a penny on the ground and ignores it. No siree. I politely pick it up and retrieve it for eventual use.

While there are many who have become millionaires and beyond because of an inheritance or lottery winnings, there are many who have worked hard to reach this stature. Perhaps it was making wise investments as a youngster that carried them well into their adult life. Many may be reaping the benefits of being financially disciplined. I imagine them having saved their meager allowances consisting of pennies, nickels and dimes.

Although those type of stories intrigue me, mine is so far from that reality. But it doesn’t discourage me on my mission to save money when and where I can.

Here’s One Way I Save Extra Money

When I make a purchase at the store, I typically will not give the cashier the exact change. For example, if something costs me $2.89, I will give the cashier $3.00 or a $5.00 bill instead. Upon receipt of the change, I put it in my purse. Eventually my purse will become heavy because of the accumulation of coins. This is a reminder for me to clean out my purse but more importantly to put that change in some kind of piggy bank or container at home. I look at this as my emergency or rainy day fund. Sometimes I don’t bother this stash of cash for several months. At that time I take it to my local bank and convert it for my use.

What I Do With That Extra Money

Sometimes this cash will go towards spending money for a vacation, buying some home accessories, clothes, and most recently towards a new computer. I am always surprised at how much I have actually saved in a few months.

Now while this hasn’t made me a millionaire it has afforded me with yet another way to creatively save and to enjoy an extra financial bonus from time to time. And many times it comes when the bottom of the money barrel needs to quickly be replenished.

Rest assured, I won’t be balking when I see a lone penny on the ground. It’ll just be the beginning of another financial adventure. Don’t let those pennies pass you by. You never know where it might take you. Save on my friends, save on!!
