The Dangers of Heartburn

If you have get heartburn on a regular basis I have a story for you. My Aunt recently went through a very frightening time when she was diagnosed with cancer of the esophagus. Her doctor said it was from acid reflux. She did have problems with heartburn & used to take Tums or Rolaids to treat it. It was a truly terrifying thing for my Aunt & our family. She ended up needing chemotherapy & radiation therapy. And her mass went away. She was very blessed.

If you suffer from heartburn regularly you should consider preventing it & not treating it as it’s happening. All of that acid can do nasty things to your throat & esophagus. I have been getting heartburn on & off for years. I used to be on a prescribed medication for it but ended up going off of it. I was then treating the pain with Tums when it came. I began limiting my caffeine intake & my heartburn seemed to go away … but it has since returned. I went to my Doctor to get something to prevent the heartburn. I am now on Tecta for it. If you consider going on a medication there is some over the counter meds. (in drug stores) called Ranitidine. I think it’s the same as Zantac. But there are some just called Ranitidine. Or you can get a prescription from your Doctor. I would imagine the costs are comparable to treating heartburn while it’s there. Prevention is the way to go.

It’s like preventing a forest fire. You can stop a fire once it’s raging, but there will be damage done. Think about talking to your physician to see what the best option is for you. If you decide to go to the drug store to look into the OTC drugs, maybe Google “Heartburn” or “Stomach Acid Production”. That’s what these drugs do, they control the acid in your stomach from producing, which causes the heartburn. I work at a drug store & you wouldn’t believe how many people buy products to stop heartburn. It’s very common. I wish I could tell all of them my Aunt’s story, but in my position I am unable. That’s sort of why I’m writing this.

If you smoke or consume alcohol you may experience more heartburn. You should seriously consider preventing it. Google “Cancer of the Esophagus” and you will find many articles on the subject relating to tobacco & alcohol consumption.

Take good care of yourself!
