Stranger Danger at School

Stranger danger is no joke. Children go missing from schools every day because they don’t know any better. Teaching your kids stranger danger is very important. The last thing that any parent wants is to see their child on the news because they thought they were being picked up from school by a person their parent trusted. To avoid this, teaching stranger danger is very important so that your child will be safe, whether they are at school or at home. Here are some safety tips that can help keep your child safe at school.

Buddy System – If you live too close to the school for your child to ride a bus, make sure they have a friend to walk home with them. If your neighbor is available to pick them up that would be even better because they will have someone they know and trust to walk with. Code Words – If you plan on having your children picked up by a friend or family member; give that person as well as your child a code word for the day that they have to use before getting in the car. Make sure that you change the code word each time so that your child knows that it is safe for them to go with that person. Even if it is grandma picking them up, but they see another person that says they will give them a ride, there is no reason to cause a panic by your child not knowing who the person to get them for the day is. Make sure it is a simple word that they can remember but not something that would come up in everyday conversation. Code words such as banana, goose or stars are simple enough to remember but different enough that they aren’t talked about every day. Yelling – Most parents hate when their children yell, but there are some instances when yelling is warranted, and stranger danger would be one of them. Never teach your child to yell stop or help because, statistically, nobody will stop to help. If you teach your child to yell fire or rape when someone is trying to get them in a car, most everyone on the street that sees them will come running.
