Stopping the Cold Bugs

Due to a problem with my immune system, I have been doing a lot of research on things to help prevent the common cold. For someone like myself, a cold usually turns into a nasty infection or pneumonia.

After an illness in 1993, my immune system stopped working altogether. One of my sons gives me a weekly immune treatment that is supposed to help me fight off infections.

I still get sick more than normal and colds most always turn into pneumonia.

According to the people who responded to the Home Remedies survey, they have developed a lot of ammo to fight the common cold. I have decided to join them in their fight against colds. I hope this will be just the beginning of learning what it takes to fight off this world of germs.

Here is a list of some of the things I found that are beneficial in the fight against the common cold. Onions, garlic, and lots of black pepper are used in your chicken soup. Add to that a shot of lemon juice to your hot tea. You will need immune enhancing herbs such as, Echinacea and goldenseal. Vitamin C and zinc with that. Salt water is used to gargle and can also be used in the nose for congestion. You can mix yourself or buy saline drops. Drink plenty of orange juice. It is suggested if you have a lot of respiratory distress to use mustard. Rub on chest and cover. Strong liquor mixed with hot lemonade is another good one. Should be used only for medicinal purposes. It helps to sweat it out.

With all of these cures, it appears that vitamin C stands out more than any. It was recommended by nearly 80% of our survey takers. It is said to definitely relieve the symptoms and if used regularly, it will help to keep you from getting colds as often. Some work up to 2,000 milligrams a day claiming not to get sick at all during the winter. It is good to add large amounts of garlic with that. You may buy that from health food stores or just buy garlic pills. They actually make garlic pills that do not leave you with an odor that others can smell.

According to a lady from Yucca Valley, California, she has been doing as the “book” says. The book is Vitamin C, the Common Cold, and the Flu. It has worked for her. She claims she has not had a cold since following her regimen of 300 to 500 milligrams of Vitamin C a day. If she feels a cold coming on, she increases that dose to 4,500 milligrams a day until her symptoms are gone. Many claim to not having a cold for years, such as Mary from Michigan. She takes 500 milligrams a day, plus bioflavonoids. If she feels a cold coming she doubles her dose. Bioflavonoids are marketed as C-complex.

According to an analysis of a dozen of these studies, 37% average reduction in the duration of colds treated with vitamin C, usually by using 1,000 milligrams daily. To try to stop a cold before it starts, as soon as one feels a symptom, he or she needs to double their usual dose.

There are many more that we may get into later. If interested, there is plenty of info on the internet or Linus Pauling”s book, Vitamin C, the Common Cold and the flu.

As always, take care because all things have side effects. Vitamin C can interfere with your copper absorption if you use more than 1,000 a day for long term maintenance. High doses can also cause diarrhea and cramping in some people. If so, you can try taking it with a lot of water and some wheat bran, suggest the American Health Foundation in New York. Also chewable Vitamin C can cause tooth erosion of the enamal.

I think I will stock up on some of this stuff before winter gets here. I am definitely going to try some of these suggestions.
