Stephen Colbert’s Super PAC Making Mockery of Electoral Process

COMMENTARY | ABC News reports that Stephen Colbert’s super PAC is spending money in South Carolina ahead of the state’s primary. Colbert is using ads to label Republican front-runner Mitt Romney a “serial killer” and encouraging voters to choose Herman Cain, when they go to the polls next Tuesday as a sign of support for Colbert. Although Colbert is not on the ballot, he actually has a higher favorability than other Republican candidates, according to Public Policy Polling. Here is how I feel about Colbert entering the political arena.

I think that the comedian is making a mockery of the electoral process with his “candidacy,” and it really is going to hurt the Republican Party. For one, Colbert is a satirical comedian, which means he is really making fun of the Republican Party, and not really supporting the Republican Party. I also find it a little offensive that he wants voters to put Cain on the ballot in support for him, because that is just wrong. If Colbert wants to be in the election, then he should have voters write in his name, and not use the name of someone else that was actually in the race for a while. I think the fact that Colbert is doing better in the polls than Republican candidates really says a lot about how lackluster the Republican presidential field is this time around. Colbert has a huge following of fans, and they often will go out of their way to do things for him, which is why I think he has gained momentum in the recent poll. In these tough economic times, voters need to get serious about picking a candidate for the Republican Party, and Colbert is just being a distraction.

On the other hand, I do think he is doing the voters a service by pointing out in an entertaining way the dangers of the super PAC system, because it helps make the process easier to understand. Colbert forming the super PAC committee can really help average American people understand the whole electoral process, and it can help those not so knowledgeable in politics. I think using entertainment to bring real issues to the American people is a good thing, but I think he could do it without actually forming the super PAC, and he could do it without entering the presidential race. Colbert can really teach people in a fun way, but I just do not think that this is the right way to go, because it takes away from the real issues at hand within the political environment.
