‘Smash’: Who is Katherine McPhee?

The new show on NBC’s lineup early next year, “Smash,” has an interesting cast sure to make the show live up to its name. The show is set to premiere on Feb. 6, and is about characters who come together to put on a Broadway show based on the life of Marilyn Monroe. The nature of the show itself means that viewers can look forward to stellar entertainment.

One of the stars of the show is “American Idol” runner-up Katharine McPhee . McPhee plays Karen Cartwright, a girl from Iowa who becomes the favorite to play Marilyn Monroe. McPhee was the runner-up during the sixth season of “American Idol” when she captured the love of fans with her beauty, poise and remarkable singing voice.

Since her debut on “American Idol,” McPhee has been busy recording. Her first album, “Katharine McPhee,” debuted at #2 on the Billboard 200. The album’s first single, “Over It,” was certified gold in 2008. Since then she has recorded two more very successful albums, the latest being “Christmas is the Time to Say I Love You.”

“Smash” will not be McPhee’s first acting stint. Aside from some small guest roles, her studio acting debut came in 2008 when she was in “The House Bunny” co-starring Rumer Willis and Emma Stone. McPhee also starred in a pilot that was not picked up for series called “The Pink House.”

McPhee has had endorsement deals, one with Neutrogena. She was also named one of the “100 Most Beautiful People” in People magazine in 2007.

Katharine McPhee was born in Los Angeles and began singing at 2. She spent many years performing in school musicals and plays. She attended Boston Conservatory for three semesters where she majored in musical theater. McPhee has struggled with eating disorders in her past. She told People magazine that she began starving herself and exercising compulsively at 13. She became bulimic at 17. After approximately seven years battling the disorder, McPhee entered a rehab program. What many people don’t know is that McPhee entered rehab after passing the “American Idol” audition.

McPhee’s starring role in “Smash” is sure to draw her old “American Idol” fans, as well as fans of her music. It is also an opportunity for her to make a real mark as an actor.
